Pakistani Army Fights Taliban In Streets
from CBSNews.com | AP

Pakistani security forces have entered the main town in a northwestern valley where Taliban fighters are holed up, engaging the militants in fierce street fights, the army’s top spokesman said Saturday.

Capturing the town of Mingora is critical to Pakistani efforts to regain the Swat Valley and prevent it from being a safe haven for insurgents increasingly threatening the Muslim nation’s stability. It could prove a major test for a military more geared toward conventional warfare on plains than bloody urban battles.

Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas also told reporters Saturday that at least 17 alleged militants had been killed over the previous 24 hours in the offensive.

The military operation has strong support from Washington. Insurgents in northwestern Pakistan also launch attacks across the border on U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Ajab Gul, a taxi driver from Swat who arrived in Islamabad as an internally displaced person (IDP) this week, narrated a harrowing account of how he fled Mingora when the curfew was relaxed about a week ago.

Massive Car Bomb Rocks Lahore, Pakistan
from CBSNews.com | AP

A senior minister in the Punjab government, told reporters that about 30 people were killed in the car bomb blast in Lahore on Wednesday. More than 100 people were believed to be injured.

The blast mid-morning Wednesday was powerful enough to shear walls off buildings in the main business district of Lahore.

Gunfire was heard in the area after the blast, and local media reported armed men engaged in small arms fire with police in several buildings in the area, according to CBS News’ Farhan Bokhari.

Alex Crawford, of CBS News partner network Sky News, reports that the blast struck in the heart of Lahore, near the border with India, and damaged a police station, an office of Pakistan’s main intelligence agency and a court in the densely populated city.

Senate Passes $91.3 Billion War Bill
from CBSNews | AP

The Senate on Thursday passed a $91.3 billion military spending bill, shorn of money President Barack Obama wants to close the Guantanamo Bay prison but allowing him to significantly ramp up the U.S. war in Afghanistan.

The Senate voted 86-3 to pass the bill, which provides money for military and diplomatic operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, setting up House-Senate talks on a compromise measure to present to Obama next month.

The spending measure closely tracks Obama’s request for war funds, although the $80 million he was seeking to close the U.S. naval prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was dropped Wednesday.

A three-day Senate debate on the bill featured little of the angst over the situation in Afghanistan that permeated debate in the House last week on companion legislation.

Obama is sending more than 20,000 additional troops there and, for the first time next year, the annual cost of the war in Afghanistan is projected to exceed the cost of fighting in Iraq.
